Ah, February, the month of love! But what if you’re just not feelin’ it? We’re not talking about your significant other… we’re talking about your digital marketing agency (see here). How do you know when it’s time to break things off? Time to see other agencies? Well, we’ve got five reasons for you. Check out these signs that you should break up with your agency.

1. If they aren’t getting you results

AKA overpromising and under-delivering… a classic client retention move that only makes matters worse. The agency says things like “We can get you whatever you want” or promising specifics like “this month’s strategy WILL increase your conversion percentage by 12%.” We all know there are just some things that you can’t completely control, and anyone who tells you otherwise doesn’t know what they’re doing. So, when their promises fall through and report to you with low ROI – you know that’s a deal-breaker. Don’t leave your strategy up to fate. You deserve someone realistic and grounded.

2. They don’t respect your vision

They may be the “experts” – or refer to themselves as such – but no one knows your brand better than you do. They should offer suggestions and strategies based on research and best practices, but don’t let them talk you out of your vision. Most agencies would be happy to find a way or solve a challenge to make it work for you. Besides, do they even know the first thing about your brand? Or are they too busy complimenting your product’s packaging without finding the time to dig deeper into who your product really is?

Girl, leave ’em.

3. They’re behind the times

It’s 2018, and they’re still presenting strategies that would barely work in 2008. Do you ever find yourself being the one pitching new ideas to them? Or learning late in the game about trends and updates that would pertain to your strategy? If so, this relationship might be one-sided. One of the great things about the digital landscape is that it’s ever-changing… and if you’re stuck doing the same thing that you did even two or three years ago, it’s time for an upgrade.

4. Plain and simple: you just don’t get along

Let’s not make this more confusing than it needs to be. If you just don’t get butterflies like you used to, or all those little quirks you used to love are just getting old, don’t be afraid to make a change. Granted, you don’t have to be friends with your agency, but you should be able to get along with your contact there and feel like their team is on your side.

5. They aren’t responsive, especially when you need them

You keep telling yourself that, sooner or later, they’re going to realize that they should be taking your messages and getting back to you in a timely manner. But since day one, it’s such a hassle to get ahold of them, and they only reach out to you when it’s convenient for them. You’re left wondering if they treat all their clients like this – or do they just have too many to keep track of? Don’t waste your time with agencies that bite off more than they can chew.
